Glasgow's Lean Canteen Keeping It Clean
Slap bang in the centre of Shawlands, next door to popular restaurant Black Dove and across the road from two gyms is an entirely different eaterie from what used to be there! The owners of Lean Canteen say they are ready to “shake up the food scene in Shawlands”. They certainly will be giving the more traditional restaurants and takeaways a run for their money with their health-focused food.
Inside the space is minimal with the colour green and lots of wood giving the restaurant a natural feel. This is an oasis of calm in the middle of the Southside, where you can watch the servers hard at work whipping up a smoothie or two, or sit outside and watch the world (well, Shawlands at least!) go by.
The menu isn’t your usual affair, one side has information on food prep and everything you need to know about macros and super foods such as kale, avocado and acai berry. If you are just a starter in the world of healthy food, then Lean Canteen has your back. The menu has a wide range of dishes suitable for those dipping their toes into macros to those who are hardcore. Each dish has a breakdown of the macros, calorie content and lists whether it is vegan-friendly, dairy-free or gluten-free.
Acai bowls, which are thick, chilled pureed fruit with toppings made for the anti-oxidant rich acai berry are sure to be a favourite. The red bowl with a mix of red sweet fruits and peanut butter topped with pomegranate, strawberries and chia seeds is delicious and bound to give you lots of long-serving energy to stop an afternoon sugar crash.
Blended juices with mixes to hydrate, refuel, detox and give energy using fresh ingredients such as kale, celery, apple, cucumber, melon, coconut water and moringa are absolutely the right things to perk you up in the morning.
Talking of morning, there is also a breakfast menu with smoothies, avocados and much more for munching so there’s need to succumb to a fry-up or bacon roll here!
Larger meals such as sandwiches are served on malted rye bloomer to help keep insulin levels balanced. These include fillings such as chicken and avocado, vegan-friendly mushroom, halloumi and Italian pepper. Restaurant dishes to eat in or to go include paprika roast chicken with sweet potato mash, garden vegetables and red pepper sauce or and there’s also a healthy massaman vegetable curry with mixed vegetables and brown rice for more of a kick.
If you’re on a complete health kick and need a hand then Lean Canteen can also help with a bespoke meal-prep service. Whether you want to bulk up, lose weight or simply eat healthier, their prep service is a handy addition to the Southside and wider Glasgow food scene.
