Cervical Cancer charity Jo’s Cevical Cancer Trust hit up George Square this morning for day one of their first ever UK roadshows. The tour hopes to urge women to be Cervix Savvy and will tour around until March 31st ending up over at the Forge Market in the East End of the city. Sarah who is one of the many volunteers wearing pink hoodies outside their decorated bright van is seeking people of all ages and gender to visit them. Sarah told GlasgowLiving: “We are urging people to come over and talk to us about cervical cancer. “Even if you are a guy concerned about your girlfriend then come along and have a chat with us.” “We want to get more attention out there about cervical cancer and how we can catch it early.”

Jo’s Trust was set up by London businessman James Maxwell after his wife Jo died in 1999 from the disease. Since then they have worked hard to raise awareness and offer support to thousands of women. In their first ever UK roadshow they are visiting areas with low smear screening test rates, encouraging more women to take the lifesaving test which can help detect up to 75% of cervical cancers and has helped save 5,000 lives in the UK each year.

Sarah hopes that the presence of the roadshow in Glasgow will encourage more women to consider the test which is offered every three years for women aged 25-49 and every five years for women aged 50-64. Sarah added: “We hope that more women can talk about the smear test because it is nothing to be embarrassed about. “It could save your life so it vital that all women get tested so we can treat this disease early.”

Sarah and the other trained volunteers will be available from 10 am till 4 pm every day of the roadshow, which takes place in a specific area four days of each week. They are also seeking medical professionals to come along and talk about their experience in dealing with cervical cancer.
