The Pizza Revolution taking over Glasgow's West End
It has been clear for some time that the West end of Glasgow has gone through an upmarket pizza revolution. And by pizza we mean the real stuff, pizza like Glasgow has never seen before. Forget your Papa John’s, Dominoes or Pizza Hut these joints are serving up a masterclass on how pizza should be.
Delighting the streets of Glasgow’s trendiest neighbourhood this pizza frenzy has brought the highest quality right on to the West ends doorstep covering every aspect of the perfect pizza. We look at how the current three recently opened pizzerias are sending waves through the West End and what to expect from the hotly anticipated newcomer, Toni’s Pizzeria who are opening their second branch right at the heart of Glasgow’s pizza district.
Arguably the spark that ignited this crusade for fine handcrafted dough was the August 2016’s opening of Baffo. Operating as a pizza, birra and bistro Baffo made its home in Finneston offering great pizzas in a stylish modern venue. Nearly a year on and they are still continuing to serve the customers on the busy Argyle Street strip with their pizzas receiving rave reviews for their authentic style made with fresh ingredients. But perhaps the most alluring feature is their Mezzo Metro, or half metre long pizza looks as good as it sounds. They may have started the trend are continuing to receive rave reviews as they also feature in third place on TripAdvisors best of list…
The next pizza opening came in the form of a completely new venture, with a drive to create something different.
Inspired by the authentic rustic style shown by the likes of Paesano in the city centre, Pizza West aimed to bring quality toppings direct from their sister deli the Great Western Sandwich company and create an authentic crisp sour dough pizza cooked to perfection in their in house volcano (pizza oven).
Moving into the huge venue once occupied by the Butterfly and the Pig in Partick, they began to dish out their delicious pizzas in December last year.Since then Pizza West has continued to impress the locals through their innovative toppings that range from a classic spicy N’Duja sausage to Korean speciality Kimchi it seems like there is nothing these guys won’t try on a pizza. Not only that there are some great sides as well such as meatballs or buffalo wings and to top all that off some seriously good dips made for their authentic crusts.
It was clear that the West End had become a pizza haven when Paesano arrived. The Godfather of pizza in the city centre, there was an overwhelming buzz and its easy to see why. Because their Napoletana pizza is arguably the most authentic you will find in Glasgow. Not only are their expertly trained pizzaiolo’s, (pizza chefs to you or me) trained to produce pizzas of the highest quality, but their oven is also from Naples.
Since their arrival, the huge neon block Paesano sign at the back of the restaurant has lit up Great Western Road, as their home just up from Kelvinbridge is constantly buzzing and has become a real asset to the already busy mini strip.
Not only is the pizza expertly crafted, but the toppings are fresh and every bit as authentic too. With the best sourced Italian meats and cheeses, they offer truly irresistible pizzas that give you a little slice of Naples right in the heart of the West End.
Toni’s will be the next to join the West End pizza club and that is something to get seriously excited about. They will throw open their doors to their new West End venue on Gibson Street and the new venue couldn’t have come at a better time after their Giffnock joint won Scotland’s best pizzeria of 2016.
They are now ready to stake their claim West and with mouth-watering pizzas and calzones already putting them on the map, there is no doubt Toni’s will make waves come their opening. If their much loved Giffnock pizzeria is anything to go by then the West End is in for yet another treat.
