No. 1 Greatest Footballing Moment at Hampden
Not many people would disagree with number one on our list.
Zizou’s goal in the Champions League Final was one of the greatest pieces of footballing magic ever witnessed in the history of the sport. It could be said that it was one of the grandest moments in the history of sport itself.
Champions League finals are normally fraught affairs, with so much at stake, even the most free flowing of teams, tend to become introverted, the fear of making a mistake tends to outweigh the ambition to create something unique, something fitting of a match winner. Something universally unforgettable.
Zinedine Zidane, the maestro, wasn’t short of a red card or two during his career, or the occasional burst of rage. (take for example his sending off in the World Cup Final). But he had genius to match his insanity.
Zidane provided a moment of sheer genius in the Real Madrid vs Bayer Leverkusen Champions League Final 2002.
At 1-1 the game seemed to be petering out, both teams unsure whether to stick or twist, to wait for extra time and risk penalties or go for glory and throw caution to the wind. To live and die by the sword. Real pushing forward but Leverkusen seemingly able to frustrate Real’s Galactico’s.
A clever one-two is played between Solari and Roberto Carlos, sending the Brazilian defender scampering down the wing. Carlos just about managing to get cross into the box, more hopeful than precise, the ball is lofted into the box, dropping out of the sky like a bullet, Zidane swivels his body and connects with perfect accuracy sending the ball into the top corner of the net.
A piece of history, a piece of magic. A moment fit for the occasion. Probably the best goal scored in a final anywhere ever.
Fitting moment to win the greatest trophy in club football.
